About Me
My name is Sesar Parra, and I am a jazz vocalist and trumpeter with a deep passion for performing and studying jazz. I am currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science at Northern Arizona University (NAU), but music has always been an essential part of my life.
I was honored to be selected for the Arizona Band and Orchestra Directors Association (ABODA) All-State Jazz Band in 2023, an experience that pushed me to further develop my skills as a performer. At NAU, I play lead trumpet in the university’s Jazz Band, where I collaborate with talented musicians and refine my approach to ensemble playing.
Musical Work
In addition to instrumental performance, I am also a jazz vocalist. I enjoy interpreting timeless jazz standards and exploring the nuances of phrasing, tone, and improvisation. I currently sing for the Valley Jazz Cooperative (VJC) and have performed in a variety of settings, both in small group combos and larger ensembles.
Beyond performing, I am passionate about the study of jazz and its rich history. One of my main interests is transcribing trumpet solos, breaking down the improvisational language of jazz legends to deepen my understanding of their artistry. I share my transcriptions through my website and YouTube channel, where musicians can access them as a resource for learning and inspiration.
Musical Inspiration & Future Goals
I am heavily influenced by jazz greats such as Chet Baker, Nat "King" Cole, Wynton Marsalis, and Frank Sinatra, drawing inspiration from both instrumental and vocal traditions. My goal as a musician is to continue growing as both a vocalist and a trumpeter, sharing my love for jazz through live performances, recordings, and educational content.
Feel free to explore my work, and don’t hesitate to reach out for collaborations in jazz performance, transcriptions, or live gigs!
